WillingWay CEO Urges Ghanaian Government to Strengthen Fight Against Illicit Drugs

Lydia Abena Manu Adofo, Chief Executive Officer of the WillingWay Recovery and Rehabilitation Center, has called on the Government of Ghana to intensify efforts to combat the escalating problem of illicit drug abuse nationwide.

She made this heartfelt appeal during the 2nd edition of the Ashanti Business Merit Awards (ABMA) and Conference Night at Lancaster Hotel in Kumasi. Addressing distinguished guests, Manu Adofo highlighted the devastating impact of drug abuse, especially among young people, and its threat to the country's human capital development.

She emphasized the need for the government to adopt more proactive strategies, including stricter law enforcement, community education programs, and the expansion of rehabilitation facilities. According to her, while WillingWay has contributed significantly to supporting individuals battling substance abuse, the rising number of cases necessitates a coordinated national response.

“The fight against illicit drugs cannot be won by rehabilitation centers alone,” she stated. “It requires strong partnerships with government agencies, local authorities, schools, and families to address the root causes of addiction.”

Manu Adofo also called on private sector stakeholders to invest in initiatives that prevent drug abuse and support recovery efforts. She pointed out that regions like Ashanti are experiencing increasing drug-related crimes, which pose serious threats to security and economic progress.

She urged a multi-sectoral approach to tackle the social and economic factors fueling drug abuse. Additionally, she praised her staff and partners for their dedication amid sector challenges and appealed to the government to increase funding for addiction treatment facilities across Ghana.
