Recent reports reveal that over two million Ghanaians are grappling with mental health issues, representing approximately 13% of the nation's population. Alarmingly, there is a staggering 98% treatment gap, underscoring the urgent need for action.
In response to this concerning data, Madam Lydia Abena Manu Adofo, Chief Executive Officer of Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre in Ejisu Asewaase, Ashanti Region, has called on the government to prioritize mental health. Speaking with Oyerepa FM’s Okogyeabour Ocran shortly after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ghana Philanthropy Awards in Accra, she expressed deep concern over the neglect of mental health care in Ghana.
Madam Lydia emphasized that the escalating mental health crisis demands immediate government intervention. She proposed that mental health services be incorporated into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which could significantly reduce treatment costs and make care more accessible.
“The high costs associated with mental health treatment are often unaffordable for many. Including mental health in NHIS can help address this challenge and serve as a critical step towards national security,” she stated.
She further described the current situation as a potential threat to national stability if left unaddressed. A common misconception, she noted, is that mental health illnesses are purely spiritual issues, which hampers effective treatment. To combat this, Madam Lydia stressed the importance of public education campaigns to dispel myths and promote understanding.
Additionally, mental health professionals at Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre urged the public to pay closer attention to their mental well-being. They emphasized that mental health is just as vital as physical health and encouraged proactive measures to seek help when needed.
It is clear that prioritizing mental health care and integrating it into national health policies is essential for the well-being of all Ghanaians and the security of the nation as a whole.
